Reduce Cystic Acne

Cystic acne differs from typical acne in its severity and stubbornness to treatments. It appears on the face or any other parts of the body, in the form of pustules, and in some cases, nodules. An acne condition with both nodules and cysts is known as nodulcystic acne.

Overactive oil glands, excessive dead skin cells within the pores and acne-causing bacteria are contributors to acne breakouts. Unlike typical acne which occurs close to the skin surface, cystic acne affects the deeper skin tissues, causing severe damage and possible scarring. These inflamed blemishes are unsightly and can be painful at times. Popping or pressing out cysts or nodules should be avoided; otherwise scarring of the skin is very likely.

Over-the-counter acne treatments are effective for mild to medium acne conditions; however a more complex acne treatment or a combination of treatments is required to reduce cystic acne. The healing period is longer, and successive treatments are required. In some cases, it is advisable to consult a doctor or dermatologist.

Some common remedies to reduce cystic acne include oral antibiotics, zinc oxide cream, corticosteroid injections or surgical routines. Doctors often employ isotretinoin or vitamin A derivatives such as Retin-A for resistant strains of cystic acne. Though the healing takes a while, it is possible to reduce cystic acne swelling and pain. Benzoyl peroxide which has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties can be used.

Other natural remedies which help to reduce swelling of cystic acne include applying ice, egg white or toothpaste to the inflamed areas. Tea tree oil is highly recommended due to its anti-bacterial constituents, which is effective against acne-causing bacteria. Aloe vera is often used to ease swelling and irritation, and can be applied to the inflamed areas for immediate relief.

To prevent cystic acne, it is important to take care of your diet and personal hygiene. A regular cleaning routine with a mild cleanser is recommended to keep the skin clean. It is important to add nutritional supplements such as Vitamins A and E to your diet, and avoid saturated fats, refined sugars and all processed foods.
